Manny being Manny
Wed, July 2, 2008 @ 0:21AM
Manny Pacquiao has done it again. Saturday, Pacquiao (47-3, 36 KO) won a world title in his fourth different weight class. This time it was a lightweight (135 pounds) crown over David Diaz (34-1-1, 17 KO) by TKO in the ninth round in his first bout at that weight. I have yet to see the fight (it was originally a $50 pay-per-view buy) but from what I've heard, Pacquiao was totally dominant. Compubox numbers tell quite a story. Pacquiao connected on 180 of 490 power punches, to Diaz's 59 of 319. There's no doubt in my mind that Pacquiao is the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world. He began his career at 106 pounds in 1995 and has climbed up each division with ease. Where will Pacquiao end his career? Some say he'll end up at welterweight (147 pounds). I'm not sure, but I do know one place Pacquiao will end up...the Boxing Hall of Fame. Until next time, I'm throwing in the towel.

Euro 2008 showcases worlds newest stars
Tue, July 1, 2008 @ 10:28PM
The Euro 2008 final final that saw Spain notch a 1-0 win over Germany Sunday, was just the thing to tip off a strong off season in Europe. And those that had a strong tournament are finding themselves in high demand now that international play has come to a close. Tops on the list is Spanish striker and Euro 2008 leading goal scorer David Villa. Villa may have missed the championship match, but that hasn't stopped the likes of Premier League heavy weights Liverpool and Chelsea from taking a run at the Valencia star. But La Liga's Real Madrid and Barcelona appear to be Villa's top choices. Wherever he lands though, he should have and easy time finding the back of the net. Villa isn't the only player to up his stock with a strong Euro performance. Germany's Bastian Schweinsteiger has drawn interest from Milan, and the Italian club is willing to pay Bayern Munich a 21.5 million euro transfer fee for the 23-year-old.

Woot, here is it
Thu, July 3, 2008 @ 1:28PM
Woot, is a very simplistic, yet very useful site that can save you some money. The site, Woot.com, basically has one deal a day, and for the most part, nothing more fancier than that. There's one product, at nice bargain, and people have the opportunity to purchase the hot sale item before it becomes sold out. Once the product is gone, that's it. You'll have to wait until tomorrow to find a new deal. And that previous day's deal is history. So you have to act fast sometimes. For example, I visited Woot.com today in the early afternoon and it had the Sling Media Sling Box. The item, it a very hot piece of property because it can stream your own cable television to, say, your work computer or any other Internet-enabled device. It was selling for a bargain $70, and it was already sold out. Woot puts up new products at about 1 p.m. EST and, depending on the product, the item can sell out within a short period of time.

Hockey tough dudes
Wed, June 4, 2008 @ 1:00PM
During Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Finals Monday night, Penguins forward Ryan Malone was struck directly in the face by a Hal Gill slap shot. The nasty injury, which dropped Malone directly to the ice, took place at the end of the second period. It was a grusome sight as it clearly did more damage to his already broken nose. Now among the things I never want to have happen to me is getting hit in the face with a piece of frozen, vulcanized rubber traveling approximately 90 MPH. I'd rather kiss the backside of a mule. If, by some terrible chance, I did get hit in the face with a slap shot, I can assure you I'd NEVER, EVER just get up and skate off the ice. I just wouldn't. No way, no how. You'd need a stretcher and about 15 G.I. Joe Band-Aids to get me off that ice. Ryan Malone didn't. Moments after being dropped to the ice by the shot, he picked himself up, covered in blood, and skated to the team's dressing room.

Alright, I Get The Point, All Ready
Sat, July 5, 2008 @ 3:47PM
If there is one thing I've learned during my time as a reporter, it's that you have to have thick skin. Not in the literal, crocodilian kind of way, but more in the figurative manner of not allowing things to bother you. I remember the first time I was threatened with physical harm and the time someone told me they would bash the “heck” out of my truck if took a photo at a crime scene. I also remember the time some defendant in a murder trial actually grabbed my notebook like it was some sort of power source and that without it, I could no longer write about him allegedly and “accidentally” shooting his girlfriend five times in the span of 20 minutes. That all comes with the job. It's not the pleasant part, but it is one aspect of being a reporter that requires remaining calm and pushing ahead with the duty at hand. The important thing to note is that I, at least, understand the positions of the people cited in the examples given.

Playgroup … fun and educational
Mon, June 30, 2008 @ 11:25PM
Zachary is an only child. Add to that the fact that Grandma watches him while I’m at work and his closest cousins live in Kansas and you can understand my concern that when it is time for him to start preschool and kindergarten he wouldn’t know how to act around other kids. Shortly before Zach’s first birthday I learned of a playgroup sponsored by Columbiana County Help Me Grow. Grandma decided to take Zach, I was working daylight at the time. I was very excited to hear how is first playgroup went. I called Grandma to hear how it went. Did he have fun? Was he shy? Did he play with other kids? Did he share? Yeah, he slept through the whole thing. Since then, he has managed to stay awake and he really enjoys it. The playgroup is structured. Open play, songs, crafts, a snack , then if there’s time, more open play. Zach likes the structure of the group. He knows when open play is almost over and it’s time for the “Clean Up” song.
