SOFTBALL: Crusaders down Wellsville in softball sectional tournament

May 16, 2008

SHADYSIDE — Rest can cure a lot of things.

Despite not playing in a week, Melissa Costantini struck out 13 and walked just one in pitching Steubenville Catholic Central to an 8-1 victory against Wellsville Thursday afternoon in OHSAA Div. IV girls softball sectional tournament action at Mead Township Park in Shadyside.

With the win, the Crusaders (17-7) advance to today’s lower bracket final at 6:45 p.m. against Jefferson County rival Toronto, which defeated Beallsville, 12-2, in Thursday’s nightcap.

Costantini retired 11 of the final 12 Tigers (3-17) to step to the plate — seven on swinging strikeouts.

“Melissa did a good job with her strikeouts because we haven’t played in over a week, so I knew our hitting might be off a bit because we haven’t seen live pitching,” explained Catholic Central head coach Jackie Rossi. “But we needed that week off because we had a couple of injuries that the girls could get healed.
