U.S. in search of respect
Win or lose today in South Africa, the United States has made waves in the international soccer world. The U.S. secured a match in the Confederations Cup final against Brazil after recording just its second ever victory over a No. 1 ranked opponent – Spain. But they didn’t just squeak by the European champions. After Jozy Altidore got the U.S. on the board in the 25th minute, Clint Dempsey sealed the win 48 minutes later to secure a decisive 2-0 win over the top ranked FIFA squad. Their prize? A rematch with Brazil, a team that soundly defeated them 3-0 in earlier Confederations Cup action. This isn’t the same American team that fell so easily to the Brazilians though. After losing their opening round match 3-1 to Italy, the U.S. fell to Brazil and put themselves into a do or die game against Egypt. The Egyptians, who had just stunned Italy 1-0, were far from a push over.
