Potters pounce to tri-meet win

Behind Boyer’s wins in the 1600 (5:06.50) and 3200 (10:53.80) the boys squad took first with 80 points, Wellsville followed with 43 and Beaver Local finished third with 39.
The boys also had a strong showing in the relays, as the team of T.J. Densmore, Shawn Quarterman, Brandon Hall and Nate Butler won the 3200 relay in a time of 9:27.40. East Liverpool also won the 800 relay (1:39.40) and 400 relay (47.00).
Matt Gibbs paced the Tigers with a trio of wins. His 16.30 finish in the 110 hurdles was more than two seconds faster than Beaver Local’s Jared Osborne, the next closest competitor.
Gibbs also won the 300 hurdles (43.10) and long jump (19-4).
In the field, Nate Carman followed up his victories in the throwing events at the Columbiana County Track Meet, held Tuesday with another strong showing, this time winning the shot put with a toss of 46-6 1/2 and the discus with a throw of 124-4.
Zach Zelinsky helped Beaver Local’s cause with a win in the 800 (2:12.00) and a second place finish in the high jump (5-6).
For the girls, the Potters took first with 78 points, followed by Beaver Local with 49 and Wellsville with 33.
McIlvain led the way for East Liverpool, recording a blistering 5:59.70 finish in the 1600 to take the event. Her mark was over 40 seconds faster than the Beavers’ Natalie Bowdler and her time of 6:39.80.
The Potter also took the 3200 with a time of 13:22, over two minutes faster than her nearest competitor.
McIlvain wasn’t the only one getting it done, though. Wellsville’s Shawntae Dillard picked up a pair of wins in the 200 (28.50) and long jump (15-3 1/4). Dillard also earned a victory in the high jump at the county meet. She truly distanced herself from the nearest competitor in the high jump, leaping almost two feet farther than the Potters’ Courtney Weyand and her height of 13-7.
Macy Weber led the Beavers with a win in the 800 with a time of 2:33.30. Weber was also winner in the 800 at the county meet.
The team of Erin Hall, Sylar Andrews, Megan Campbell and Weber earned a win for Beaver Local in the 1600 relay (4:36.40). The girls also won the 400 relay (54.90) and 800 relay (1:55.60).
