WELLSVILLE - Taking over an existing business with an established customer base can be an intimidating prospect, but Kristy Coulter says she was up for the challenge. "I've always tanned and always wanted to own my own salon," she said. As such, Coulter says she understands the needs and wants of her customers.
For example, she pointed out that Paradise Sun is air conditioned and has fans in each tanning room. She recalled having tanned at another local salon that had neither, which was a very unpleasant experience. "I was surprised the bottles of lotion weren't melting," she laughed.
In April, Kristy and her husband, JC Coulter, purchased the business and have been busy making changes ever since. Immediately, noticeable updates include rearranged decor, and a full remodeling is in the works. Each of the tanning rooms features a Level 1 bronzing bed, one of which has an integral face-tanning unit. The shop also has an airbrush spray tan unit, making them one of only a few local salons to offer spray tanning.

Cleanliness is one thing customers can always be assured of at Paradise Sun. According to Coulter, three of the business' five employees are there exclusively to sanitize the tanning beds and clean the rooms after each client is finished. For the safety of their clients, Coulter and her assistant have both undergone training and are fully certified in the regulations governing how long people are permitted to tan per session.
Before opening for business, Coulter did her homework to ensure that Paradise Sun has the lowest tanning prices around. "I called everywhere within a 20-minute radius," she said. On average, her prices are $5 cheaper than her nearest competitor, a status that she plans to maintain. "Would you spend five dollars less to come here, or pay the extra five dollars and drive out to Calcutta?" Coulter asked.
On top of their low regular prices, Paradise Sun has begun a program of monthly specials. The regular price for an unlimited month of tanning is $25, but during June, an unlimited month is only $20. For July, an even bigger value is planned: Refer a new customer to Paradise Sun and receive a free month of tanning.
Paradise Sun offers yearly tanning packages of 5, 8, 10, 15, 20, 30 or 40 sessions, good for anytime 12 months after purchase. A VIP club membership is available for $20 per year, which gives members access to VIP specials, including further discounts on monthly packages and the price of lotions.
Tanning supplies are available at Paradise Sun, from goggles and nail covers to an extensive line of lotions and moisturizers from OC, Designer Skin, Supre Tan, Devoted Creations, Pro Tan and more. In line with the rest of their services, lotions range from $15 to $35 per bottle, a substantial savings over other local salons. If none of those in stock meet the customer's needs, Coulter said special orders are always welcome.
For satisfied customers who want to brag about where they got their great tan, Paradise Sun beach towels and T-shirts will also be available.
Walk-in sessions are welcome at Paradise Sun, for a cost of only $5. Still, Coulter said it's a good idea to call and make an appointment, especially during busier periods. "During prom season, if you didn't have an appointment, you couldn't get in here," she said. Spray tan sessions are by appointment only at $25 each.
Paradise Sun Tanning Salon is currently open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday through Friday, and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays. With the arrival of cooler weather in September, they will be open seven days per week.
