Thompson Park needs your vote

June 26, 2013
The Review

Those who enjoy what Thompson Park has to offer are making it known - in a big way - nationally.

On June 10, park Superintendent J.C. Blackhurst announced his intentions to have the city's "hidden jewel" become involved in a national contest in which $100,000 is awarded to the victor.

A little more than two weeks later, Thompson Park has surged into the second position with 38,737 votes as of Tuesday afternoon.

The contest, sponsored by Coca-Cola, is a way to get people more active. The company says it is committed to being a part of the solution to obesity. And in doing so, Coca-Cola is awarding the "recreation grant to help restore, rebuild or enhance activity areas in the park."

The park with the most votes, according to the website, will win a $100,000 recreation grant from Coca-Cola and the title of "America's Favorite Park." Second- and third-place parks win $50,000 and $25,000 grants, respectively. and another $15,000 grant will be awarded, at random, to a park that finishes 4th to 25th on the leader board.

We urge all those who have used the park, in any way through the years, to help attain some grant money. You don't have to be from East Liverpool to enjoy the park and you don't have to be from East Liverpool to vote for the park.

There are several ways to vote, including via online (www.livepositively.com) as well as through two popular cellphone apps (Foursquare and MapMyFitness).

Online voting is good for 1 vote per day, Foursquare is 5 votes per day and MapMyFitness is 10 votes per day.

"We could do so much with that money," Blackhurst said.

The superintendent said adding more family-oriented activities is on his list, as well as improvements to the playground area.

"It's an absolute longshot, but stranger things have happened," he said about the grant.

Thompson Park sits second behind Veterans Memorial Park in Moore, Okla., which led with 50,529 votes Tuesday afternoon. Mason Neck State Park in Lorton, Va., was third with 38,251.

We ask those in our area to get behind this effort. Share this idea with your Facebook and Twitter friends. Get the word out. Vote.

This is a great opportunity for our area. Let's all work together to see this happens.
