YMCA lands new equipment through grant

CALCUTTA-The Calcutta YMCA recently made a major upgrade in its facility, replacing 46 pieces of equipment with new state-of-the-art equipment, as well as adding new flooring and LED lighting.

The upgrade was funded by a $100,000 matching grant from the Appalachian Regional Committee awarded to the facility in November. The grant was made possible by a guarantee from the YMCA to raise matching funds.

The Y's loyal members have taken on the task of raising the matching funds and to date have raised about 80,000 of the 100,000 needed, according to YMCA director Abby Shemasek. "It's fantastic, our members have really stood behind us," said Shemasek.

With the grant funds, the YMCA was able to replace all of its strength and cardio training equipment, add free weights and add a functional trainer.

The equipment is made by manufacture Matrix Fitness and features a sleek, modern design that is "less intimidating" than some of the older bulky equipment, says Shemasek. New equipment includes 4 elliptical, 4

adaptive motion machines, torso rotaters, 8 new treadmills, climbmill upper and lower body workout machines, 10 new spinning bikes, 2 stationary bikes and a functional trainer

The functional trainer is multiple workouts in one, providing a plethora of workouts for nearly every muscle group.

"You're using one machine for multiple exercises, and the nice thing is that you have control," said Shemasek. She notes that all of the new cardio equipment have monitors and mp3/smartphone docking stations and all strength training pieces are adjustable to fit each individual's needs. The new equipment is also "user friendly" says Shemasek, noting that each new machine's operation is intuitive and easy to use. The 10 new spinning bikes are a welcome addition as well, because the Calcutta Y has been without the popular exercise equipment in recent years.
