SALINEVILLE - Southern Local Superintendent John Wilson expressed optimism and confusion with the results furnished by the recently released state report cards at a meeting of the Board of Education Tuesday night.

The recently-revamped state report card's results measured districts' performance in nine of 18 categories by assigning a letter grade A through F.

State School Superintendent Richard Ross advised against using the report card as basis for comparison. However, a local newspaper did just that late last month.

That comparison placed Southern among the lowest scoring districts in the area and one of two schools to receive no A's on their report card.

With incomplete and confusing data all that is currently available from the report, Wilson remained optimistic that his district can provide students with a quality education.

"Our (state) report card data came out and was a little confusing at times," said Wilson. "It's a new system so obviously we're going to take some time to decipher where we're at and how we're doing,"

Wilson explained that the district received mostly B's and C's on its report card and noted that the high school scored particularly well. "I saw some promising results," said Wilson, adding "I told the teachers on opening day: 'what matters is what is going on in your classroom' and they a very good job preparing our kids for the lessons and testing we have to endure throughout the year."
