District principals deliver good reports to BOE

WELLSVILLE –Principals throughout the district reported good news to the Wellsville Board of Education during Monday’s meeting.

High School Principal Richard Shilling said that the Sadie Hawkins dances at the middle and high schools went well, and the Veterans Day assembly was successful. He also said a Sport World Speaker, Wesley Fluellen would be today to speak with students on making positive choices.

There will be a blood drive in the high school gym on Nov. 25 a hearing/vison check for students on Nov. 26.

Schilling also said the school is receiving the Bonnie Hoffell School Health Project to support leadership and attendance initiatives and 52 students in grades seven through 12 made the honor roll with a 3.75 gpa or above.

Elementary School Principal Erin Clemmer said there is a girls and boys basketball team now for every grade level from kindergarten through sixth grade. She said the students were proud of themselves with some of them wearing their jerseys to school.

The school began a targeted math tutoring program last week run by the math department and the students are liking the class. She also said ongoing ELA intervention groups are going well.

Clemmer said starting this week students will be able to complete community service projects with the church, the police department and the library to expunge, a detention or suspension from their record.

Elementary Principal Shelbie Householder said that the first-grade students went to the Orchards at Foxcrest to visit with veterans.

The first grades students have been learning about the Macy’s Day Parade and will have a Balloons over Broadway parade on Nov. 22. The school will also have a Thanksgiving Feast on Nov. 22 for all students.

The kindergarten through second grade students are working on their Christmas program which will be at the high school on Dec. 12 at 6 p.m.

Board member Chris Amato said that it was good to see the students attend the board meeting as he addressed seventh and eighth grade Class President Rayleah Lamp who was present at the meeting.

Amato noted that more students, staff and members of community need to attend the board meetings.

During the new business portion of the meeting board members unanimously approved accepting donations for the senior class from Beth Swogger and Anne Cartwright in the amount of $1,090 and Tom Treyco McDonalds for the HS Principal’s Fund in the amount of $359.05; a request from the Wellsville Takedown Club to purchase liability insurance through Wellsville Local Schools; the adoption of the Automated External Defibrillator (AED) Emergency Action Plan and the NEOLA Policy

During the fiscal portion of the meeting, board members approved with an all-in favor vote the financial report including transfers, modifications of funds and Then and Now certificates.

They also approved the excess costs for students at Southern Local School District for the 2024-2025 school year;a memorandum of understanding with Edison Local School District BOE and Paramount Support Services for a Wellsville student effective Oct. 21;,the contract presented by Hill International Trucks LLC to purchase a 2025 CE School Bus at the OMERESA consortium bid price; the Otis Elevator contracts with price adjustments for Nov. 1, 2023 – Oct. 31, 2024, and Nov.1, 2024 – Oct. 31, 2025; and the district’s fiscal five-year forecast.

For personnel, board members approved the Washington D.C. stipend for chaperoning to Jonathan Kinkead for the 2024 trip for the CCP students; the resignation for retirement purpose of math teacher Richard Salsberry, effective Aug. 21, 2025; and multiple coaches, supplemental employees, mentors, substitutes and van drivers.

Board member Dale Palmer abstained on the vote approving van drivers as he was on the list of approved drivers.

The Wellsville Board of Education meets the third Monday of each Month at 5:30 p.m., in the media center at the Wellsville Jr. Sr. High School, 1 Bengal Blvd. The next regular meeting is scheduled for Dec. 16.
