LEETONIA — Senior Tyrell Watkins is taking Wellsville along for the ride.

Watkins had 197 yards of offense and scored 20 points in leading the Tigers past Leetonia, 35-0, in Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference play Friday.

Watkins ran for 145 yards and two touchdowns on 11 carries, caught four passes for 52 yards and another touchdown and had a key fumble recovery after Leetonia got to the 4-yard line in the first quarter.

Sixteen Division VII teams in Ohio entered the fifth week winless and two met in Leetonia.

Wellsville snapped a nine-game losing streak to improve to 1-4 on the season and 1-1 in league play.

Leetonia — which has lost 25 games in row overall and 21 straight league games — falls to 0-5 and 0-2 in the EOAC.

Wellsville, which scored 41 points through the first four games this season, got five touchdowns against Leetonia.

Richie Wyss added 71 yards and two touchdowns on eight carries and Clayten Kersey completed six of 12 passes for 83 yards.

The key play came late in the first quarter as Leetonia advanced to the Wellsville 4-yard line, but Watkins picked up a fumbled handoff and ran to the Wellsville 34. On the next play, Watkins broke several tackles and raced 66 yards for the first score. Exchange student Alonso Hernandez kicked the extra point to make it 7-0 with 2:51 to play in the first quarter.

A 17-yard run by Watkins set up Wyss’ first touchdown, an 18-yarder wiith 9:56 left in the second quarter.

Watkins scored again on a 4-yard run and added the two-point conversion to put the Tigers up 21-0 with 33 seconds left before halftime.

In the third quarter, Watkins scored on a 32-yard pass from Kersey, who added the two-point conversion run, and Wyss scored from 9 yards out to close out the scoring.

Both teams return to league play Friday as Wellsville hosts EOAC co-leader Valley Christian and Leetonia entertains Columbiana on homecoming.
